The Alabama section of the Chattahoochee RiverTrace
The Chattahoochee Trace is an 18-county region which straddles the Chattahoochee River along the Alabama / Georgia border. You will see antebellum homes, picturesque lakes and scenic wonders throughout this resplendent river corridor. The Chattahoochee River is split by a series of dams with the northern end of the Chattahoochee River in Alabama as West Point Reservoir. On its southern journey, the river is divided by a number of smaller dams including Georgia Power Company's Lake Harding or Bartlett's Ferry before it reaches Lake Eufaula.
Eufaula, in Alabama, is set high upon a bluff overlooking the beautiful 45,000-acre Lake Eufaula. Approximately 90 miles southest of the state capital, Montgomery, and along the southeastern Alabama/Georgia border Eufaula is also neighbour to Phenix City. Include Eufaula in your trip to experience the hospitality that can only be found in the Bluff City of the Chattahoochee, from the annual Pilgrimage Tour of Homes to all things recreational on the beautiful Lake Eufaula. The Christmas Tour of homes started in 2005. This festive tour includes lovely Southern homes decorated for Christmas as only Eufaulians can do! Experience Christmas in some of the South's finest homes with an afternoon of 'Christmas Present' and an early evening of 'Christmas Past Candlelight Tour'.
Phenix City, Alabama
Phenix City's RiverWalk begins just north of the city's Amphitheatre and meanders along the Chattahoochee River. The Columbus RiverWalk runs 20 miles from the National Infantry Museum through historic downtown Columbus, Alabama, to the Lake Oliver Marina. Each RiverWalk is equipped with benches, observation decks and light posts. A pedestrian bridge over the Chattahoochee River connects the two RiverWalks.
The Amphitheatre is home to concerts and celebrations and is located on the Chattahoochee River in downtown Phenix City.
There is year-round excitement in the centre of Phenix City with one of America's top outfitters providing whitewater rafting. The warm water, Southern climate and consistent release of water from upstream dams allows year-round whitewater adventure, most months without special clothing. The course was specially designed for adventure seekers and provides Class I to Class IV rapids. Whitewater Express, one of the top whitewater companies in the world, provides rafting adventures along the Chattahoochee River, the longest urban whitewater course in the world.
In July 2014, Whitewater Express opened the new Chattahoochee Outdoor Academy. This is a popular addition to Phenix City and is known regionally as the training academy for outdoor water activities. The shop teaches lessons in kayaking, fishing and paddleboarding, and the outdoor post is centrally located, allowing ease when travelling back to your hotel after a long day of rafting or training.
