Andy - Muscle Shoals, Alabama

Let us introduce you to Alabama Andy!

Andy has been immersed in the travel industry since 1993. His career began as a Travel Agent with Thomas Cook, where he spent over 20-years in diverse roles encompassing sales, product management, purchasing, and commercial operations. In 2015, he transitioned to destination representation and has been proudly representing Alabama since 2017.

'I feel very lucky to represent Alabama as it’s a brilliant destination with loads of great experiences and friendly people.'

When he's not waxing lyrical about Alabama and the Deep South, he loves spending time with his wife and daughter - she also caught the travel bug at a young age and enjoys exploring new destinations at home or overseas. Andy loves watching football and rugby union, listening to music and socialising with friends and family.

What's your hidden gem or destination highlight?

I love the diversity Alabama offers, from the mountains in the north to the 32-miles of stunning white sandy beaches in the south. The state boasts a rich history, encompassing both civil rights and the American Civil War, and is known for its incredible music hits. Unique features like white BBQ sauce and the world's largest museums dedicated to space and motorcycles add to its charm.

What's you favourite hotel or accommodation top tip?

Alabama boasts some amazing hotels, and I've had the pleasure of staying in two outstanding properties. The Grand in Point Clear, a Historic Hotel of America, is a superb resort set on a golf course with excellent leisure activities and pool areas. I also adore the Lodge at Gulf State Park, which is situated right on Alabama's stunning beaches and on the edge of The Gulf State Park.

What's been your favourite excursion?

I thoroughly enjoy exploring the recording studios in Muscle Shoals, visiting the US Space and Rocket Centre in Huntsville, and gaining insights into Alabama's pivotal role in the Civil Rights struggles at the museums in Birmingham and Montgomery. Recently, I had an incredible experience trying something new: a nighttime airboat ride in the Mobile Tensaw Delta. Witnessing the eerie glow of alligator eyes reflecting in the flashlight beam was both thrilling and slightly unnerving!

What's your top travel tip?

A great piece of advice for anyone visiting Alabama is to fully embrace the state's abundant Southern hospitality. Embrace the opportunity to chat with locals, renowned for their warmth and eagerness to share insider knowledge. Whether you're delving into historical landmarks, marvelling at the natural landscapes, or savouring the regional cuisine, connecting with the people of Alabama can enrich your journey and offer invaluable insights into the state's culture and attractions.

Do you have a top packing tip?

I always travel with too many gadgets: phones, iPads, laptops, gimbals, gaming consoles, wireless headphones, and more. I always carry a 4-port extension lead with a couple of USB ports; this way, I only need one adaptor and socket to charge everything!

Did you know fact?

In addition to being the home of the world's largest Space and Motorcycle museums, Birmingham in Alabama boasts Vulcan, the world’s largest cast iron statue. Depicting the Roman God of fire and forge, Vulcan stands at 56-feet on top of a 124-foot pedestal, and he was crafted for the 1904 World's Fair. Positioned on Red Mountain, Vulcan provides you with breathtaking views of the city, making it a great starting point for exploring Birmingham.
