A Lip-Smacking Journey

Alabama has come into its own as a foodie’s destination, but did you know that the state also boasts about its rich barbecue history?!

So much so that there is a trail dedicated solely to its traditions? From pitmasters who've perfected the art of slow-cooked meats to secret family recipes for sauces and rubs, Alabama’s BBQ history is rich and diverse - just like the BBQ flavours!

Favourite Stops Along the BBQ Trail:

Big Bob Gibson was founded in 1925 and has become an institution in Alabama’s barbecue scene. The restaurant is known for its legendary white sauce, a tangy, mayonnaise-based sauce that complements smoked chicken. The restaurant has won numerous awards and accolades over the years. Barbecue aficionados should not only try the sauce, and their smoked chicken with white sauce, but also their award-winning beef brisket, pork and ribs. Hungry yet??! We’ll carry on…

When it comes to iconic barbecue joints, Bob Sykes Bar-B-Q stands out as one of Alabama’s most cherished institutions. This family-owned restaurant has been serving barbecue since 1957. The menu features classic barbecue cooked over a hickory wood fire, adding a smoky flavour to its meats. The restaurant has won numerous awards and was named a national finalist for the American Royal Barbecue Hall of Fame in May 2024.

Founded in 1958, by John “Big Daddy” Bishop, Dreamland has become famous for its ribs served with their incredibly flavourful barbecue sauce. The restaurant’s ambiance is as authentic as it gets, with a down-home feel that is inviting and welcoming. The original restaurant is located in Tuscaloosa, but over the years, Dreamland has expanded to locations throughout the South.

Since 1967, Top Hat Barbecue has offered hickory-smoked meats and homemade sides embodying the essence of Alabama’s barbecue tradition.

Established in 1891! Golden Rule Bar-B-Q is one of the oldest barbecue restaurants in the state. It is known for its slow-cooked meats and homemade sides, and is a must-try when in the Birmingham area.

Lannie’s Bar-B-Q has been a staple in Selma for decades. The restaurant is known for its smoked pork, ribs and other classic Southern sides offering a true taste of local flavour.
