The Native American Heritage of Alabama...

Spanning over 10,000 years, Alabama's Native American history is rich and complex. There is evidence of early hunter-gatherer societies during the Paleoindian period, with major archeological sites at Dust Cave and Russell Cave. By the 16th century, when the Europeans arrived, the state was home to a number of prominent and influential Native American tribes: Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Piqua Shawnee.

Today, there are numerous Native American sites to visit and explore, showcasing the rich history and traditions of the indigenous peoples....

• In Florence, the Indian Mound & Museum is the largest domiciliary mound in the Tennessee Valley, northwest Alabama. It houses a large collection of Native American relics found in the area, with chronological displays and explanations of artifacts.
• In Fort Mitchell, explore the Chattahoochee Indian Heritage Center. It stands atop a high hill in Russell Countymon land that was once the treasured homeland of the Creek nation.
• Journey to Moulton for the Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center - An impressive 83 acre state park dedicated to remembering and celebrating the historic Cherokee nation. 
• Visit Moundville Archaeological Park near Tuscaloosa - This stunning site is home to one of the most significant Native American archaeological sites in North America and there is an amazing museum celebrating the rich history of the indigenous people.  
• A historic marker stands in Eufaula's Old Creek Town Park in memory of Chief Eufaula. In 1836, he spoke to the Alabama Legislature in then–capital Tuscaloosa before leading the last of the Creek tribe out of the state for resettlement.
• Horseshoe Bend National Military Park, located near Dadeville, is where, on March 27, 1814, General Andrew Jackson defeated Chief Menawa and the Upper or Red Stick Creeks.

The tribes and traditions of Alabama's Native Americans live on at these and many other sites throughout the state.
