Chattanooga
After grabbing a trail brochure at Chattanooga’s downtown visitors’ centre, begin your journey at Tennessee Aquarium, where you can visit with undersea creatures and tour 26 scenic miles of the Tennessee River aboard the River Gorge Explorer. Get hands-on at the Creative Discovery Museum and see the finest collection of American art in the southeast at the Hunter Museum of American Art. Enjoy the view from the Bluff View Art District, melodies from the Chattanooga Symphony at the historic Tivoli Theatre, the iconic cavern cascade of Ruby Falls and seven-state view from Rock City.
The Great Outdoors
From Chattanooga, take 27 and 29 with views of Sequatchie Valley. Stop in Signal Mountain to pick up some fresh apple cider at Fairmount Orchard or nearby Powells Crossroads and Whitwell for the Buttonwillow Church Civil War Dinner Theatre. Prentice Cooper State Forest on the Tennessee River Gorge is a must-visit for hunting, hiking and climbing. Back on 127, the Dunlap Coke Ovens Park and Museum shows how Tennessee coal was converted to industrial coke for iron smelting, and from August 5–8, don’t miss the goods at the World’s Longest Yard Sale.
Head east to Dayton and the Scopes Trial Museum to learn about the “Monkey Trials” that inspired the classic movie Inherit the Wind. Heading north toward Crossville then back to Pikeville, you’ll soon be at Fall Creek Falls State Resort Park where you can enjoy stunning waterfalls. At McMinnville, nursery capital of the world, visit 200-year-old Cumberland Caverns, Tennessee’s largest show cave, for a Bluegrass Underground concert. Don’t miss the Victorian mansion of Falcon Rest and Rock Island State Park for the Great Falls of the Caney Fork River.
Highway 56 leads you past small towns on the way to Tracy City. Hike the Fiery Gizzard Trail in the South Cumberland Recreation Area past waterfalls, panoramic overlooks and through rocky gorges. Stop in Monteagle, known for the 900-foot ascent and descent that I-24 makes here, and the beautiful Monteagle Inn and Retreat Center.
Head back to Chattanooga by Highway 41 and share a picnic at the scenic waterfall at Foster Falls Recreation Area in Jasper. Nearby South Pittsburg hosts the National Cornbread Festival April 24–25.
